Could you resist becoming your God?

One of the theories about where technology is going right now involves computers becoming super-sentient in a very short time frame. Basically, when computers can start designing the next generation of computers, then the increase in computing power becomes a curve that shoots straight up to infinity.

Make no mistake, knowledge is power. An adequately intelligent agent could readily create armies of killer robots to enslave the rest of the planet. This isn't science fiction, it's what our military is working on today, right now. They just aren't smart enough to figure it out. yet.

The prize of that kind of processing power is obvious. Effectively infinite power over others. What would YOU do with that kind of power? Forget about corruption. There is no corruption when you are the only law. Forget about popularity contests. For the omnipotent, it no longer matters what people think of you.

I suspect that most people would start enforcing the rules that they feel that their god doesn't adequately enforce himself. If the TechnoMessiah happens to be a fundamentalists, then we're all in trouble. Nanobots can be used to deliver discomfort-causing drugs to those who cuss, engage in premarital sex, or dress inappropriately. Endorphins can be delivered to those who pray on the proper schedule. Eventually, the controller melds the world into what he or she thinks it should be, overruling the wisdom of God.

Could YOU resist?
